Brown Bear Tackle Box Fly Patterns

Please read the patterns carefully before attempting to tie them.

This will help avoid frustration. I have tried to put the pattern down in order of construction and some of these can become complicated and time consuming.

Nymph
General

  Name - Carey Special - V2
image here
  Hook - Std wet 4-16
  Thread - Black
Ribbing Fine gold wire only if using Peacock or Ostrich
Weighting Lead free wire - you need to experiment and create what will be best for the waters you fish. Faster water needs more weight to get down faster and still water needs less.
Body Brown, black, or grey wool
Hackle Brown pheasant tail feather fibers tied so the form a collar extending past the end of the hook
Note

One can also use Ostrich or Peacock herl with the later being the better one for the overall effect.

I have fished this fly extensively out west and have caught Rainbow, Cutthroat, Dolly Varden, and Whitefish with it in both rivers and lakes. In the east, I have caught Bass, Perch and pan fish on it as well.
I like to have a few different colors and both weighted and unweighted along with me. This is a great fly!

The only difference between this pattern and the original I was taught is the section on weighting. The pattern was given to me by an elderly gentleman who I was guiding in 1972.
